FibroFriends

Fibromyalgia Friends and Families
Hi!

My name is Karen and I have been living with Fibromyalgia the winter of 1993. I have been the community leader for the Fibromyalgia Community at America's Doctor.Com since January of 1999. I hope to help you to learn about Fibromyalgia as well as providing a place where you can find information as well as support and possibly a few new friends.

Fibromyalgia is a mysterious illness that has no known cause or cure and even though it is not life threatening it can be devasting for those that are living with it. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder of the muscles and soft tissues, it often leaves us in so much pain that simple every day tasks seem impossible. While there are no treatments for the disease itself, it is very important that the Fibromyalgia patient learns to control the disease rather then allowing it to control their lives.

In order to be diagnosed with Fibromyalgia the patient has to meet the following criteria:

Widespread pain above and below the waist for at least three months, and the existence of pain when pressure (this has to be hard enough to turn your thumbnail white) is applied to 11 of 18 common tender points throughout the body.

But fibromyalgia symptoms go way beyond pain for most of us.

Here are some of the other symotoms that we may have to learn to live with:

  • Allergies
  • Blurred vision
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Confusion, inability to concentrate

These symptoms may vary from person to person, and may vary for individual sufferers from day to day or even hour to hour.

There Is Life After Fibromyalgia
Controlling fibromyalgia is done through various means from medicinally treating the symptoms, to acupuncture and hiropractics, relaxation therapies and the support of friends and families.

Often the people dealing with this illness hit many brick walls while trying to cope. It is often misunderstood even among doctors, Unfortuantely the friends and family often are not even there for support. People with fibromyalgia are often told it is all in their heads, that they are lazy, could get better if they wanted to and other cruel things.

Fibromyaligia is very real.

The pain that we suffer is very real. It becomes extremely important for us to have others near us that we can talk to that understand what we re going through.

It is because we need the support of friends and family so much that I have devoted this website to Fibrofriends & Families.
